There is a residential area off Dudley Road which is accessed via Junction street close to The George pub. This is an ideal location for beginners to practice moving off, stopping and steering control as there is a reasonably sharp bend halfway. We will practice turning left at the end of the street which will bring us back around. Once confident with left turns, we will start practising right turns at the Albion Street crossroad as well as how to deal with this type of junction.
You will practice hill starts and emergency stops on Union Road nearby as it’s a quiet and long street. There is a very wide point at the end, almost like a little car park, which is a dead-end and ideal for learning how to steer around back on yourself.
The Temple Way housing estate by the Oldbury Congregational Church is another ideal location to practice the same as above with the added challenge of speed bumps. This is where you will learn to slow down on the approach and change gears. There is also ample space and road length to practice emergency stops.
When you are more confident, close to Temple Way is Lower City Road past Ormiston Sandwell Community Academy. This is a very long and hilly road where you will learn how to slow down and stop with limited use of the brakes.
What can advanced learners expect?
Close to Oldbury town centre is the Birchley roundabout, which has five exits. It is a large, complex, and very busy junction. Although it has one or two lanes on approach, depending on which angle you are travelling from. Once in the roundabout, there are four lanes so lane discipline, the use of mirrors, and timely signals are of great importance to avoid a potential collision.
A large car park in Sainsbury’s provides an opportunity to practice bay parking.
Do you offer motorway lessons?
Yes, we offer motorway driving lessons. Oldbury is located near junction 2, which is accessed via Birchley Island. This roundabout is quite challenging with 5 exists, 4 lanes, and plenty of traffic throughout the day.
There are two motorway interchanges within a reasonable driving distance, both provide excellent opportunities to practice merging and exiting the motorway. The first interchange is located where the M5 joins the M6 north of West Bromwich. The second is south of Oldbury where the M5 joins the M42.

“Rita is a nice person. She made me confident whilst driving. She has good time keeping and I like the way she explains things. She is my third instructor. With my other two instructors, I didn’t really learn much but with Rita, I’ve noticed what I wasn’t learning first I am picking up now. She really boosts my confidence and with driving she is always like ‘Never give up, never give up’. Rita is a really good instructor.”
